I understand not wanting to get involved in politics; it’s stressful, and there are people who argue about it in bad faith. There is an overwhelming sense of powerlessness while being told you have the power to make a difference and if you don’t you’re bad. Even if your “side” wins there can be an exhaustion brought on by politicians saying one thing and doing eight others. Politics are not easy, and they aren’t made to be, because they are important.
Things that happen in the political sphere affect people’s lives for better and worse. Some issues should not be politicized and yet they are with gusto. Other things that should be taken up in political court are cast aside. To be fair, those sentences could mean different things to different people. That’s also part of the problem. Politics are intentionally divisive.
The snag is that one side is trying to make things more divisive than the other. They specialize in culture wars. They take basic human rights and put them under a microscope, finding any reason they can to strip them away. Then, they call foul when people (rightfully) get upset that their lives have come under attack by suit-clad weirdos who speak exclusively in hateful campaign slogans. But, to rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, it’s all bad.
50 Cent revealed on The Breakfast Club that he was offered $3 million to perform at Donald Trump’s Nazi rally at MSG. But 50 said no! He turned down all that sweet cash to avoid being associated with that slovenly hatemonger. Way to go, 50! “I’m afraid of politics, so you understand? I do not like no part of politics,” he explained. “It’s because when you do get involved in (politics), no matter how you feel, someone passionately disagrees with you.” I… what?
I don’t need someone to give a completely moral reason for turning down Donald Trump (even if there are millions). The dude could have said, “I knew I wouldn’t get paid” or “I keep my endorsements to myself.” That’s all fine! It’s this idea that someone disagreeing with you passionately is bad. As I said, there are people whose whole purpose is to disagree passionately in an attempt to weaken people’s resolve, but it’s pretty easy to tell who is being disingenuous and who is just a hateful jerk.
In 50’s defense, he may not be able to tell the difference. He continued by saying, “That’s the formula for the confusion that sent Kanye (West) to Japan. He said something about both of those things — and now he can only go to Japan.” Did Kanye get involved in politics? Yes! Has he also praised Hitler and said reprehensible things about Jewish people?! Triple yes!
This is part of the problem. Kanye didn’t lose scores of fans and supporters because of his politics. He’s a pariah because of his views on things we are forced to associate with politics. That isn’t hard to figure out unless you just don’t want to or you’re still trying to hook up with Lauren Boebert.
