They say March 1st is Plan A Solo Vacation Day and TBH, I can't think of a better place than to plan your next trip to Nicaragua. As someone who's of Nicaragua descent, I've been traveling to the Central American country by myself for the past eight years. If there's anything you want to achieve in 2018, let it be your first ~solo~ trip to Nicaragua. Here's why:
#1 It's budget-friendly
For the most part, a plane ticket to Nicaragua is not expensive at all. If you're leaving from Miami (just 2.5 hours away by air), you can easily nab a round-trip ticket for under $430 during low season. Once you're IN Nicaragua, you'll be shocked to know of how inexpensive it is. Transportation, food, nightlife, tours, hospitality, and so on, are very affordable. The national beer, for example, sets you back $1—just so you have an idea!
#2 It's an adventure paradise
Nicaragua offers so many fun activities, such as kayaking, zip lining, scuba diving, and so on. But nothing will ever compare to its one-and-only volcano boarding. The Central American country is home to the Cerro Negro Volcano in Leon, Nicaragua—the only place in the world where you can surf an active volcano. The hike is about a 45 mins. to one hour walk, but the views are amazing and sliding down is exhilarating. The tour and gear combination is about $30 and very worth your money.
#3 It's actually safe
As much as you're probably doubting a trip because of the Nicaraguan Revolution that took place from the '70s to '90s, Nicaragua is a pretty safe country. In fact, Nicaragua is the safest country in Central America, so there's that. A study from 2017 showed that it "has the lowest homicide rate —7 per 100,000 inhabitants—being Latin America’s average of 28.5."
#4 Rich culture
In Nicaragua, you'll discover street parties where the Gueguense, Gigantona, and Enano Cabezon steal the show. You can also visit Ruben Dario's home and graveyard in the colonial city of Leon. You'll probably be swooned by marimba players in a restaurant or gorgeous-looking people riding horses in the streets during an Hipica.
#5 Breathtaking views
Nicaragua is coined as the Country of Lakes and Volcanos and it's easy to see why. The landscapes of this country are all breathtaking, organic, and exotic. Not to mention they make for the perfect Instagram photo! If you want some recommendations, these are a few of my favorite spots: San Juan del Sur (pictured above), Las Isletas de Granada, Isla de Ometepe, Volcan Masaya.
#6 The food, bro!
FRITANGA is the main Nicaraguan dish. This consists of gallo pinto (rice and red beans), carne asada (roasted meat), tajadas (fried plantains), queso frito (fried cheese), and ensalada de repollo (coleslaw). Just so you have an idea, most of the foods in Nicaragua are fried, but believe me... they taste SO GOOD!
#7 Amazing nightlife
If there's something that I genuinely love about this country, it's its nightlife. No matter what day of the week, you will find a whole-in-a-wall with live music or there's always some sort of party going on at a nearby park. For a solo traveler, this is KEY, because you will make friends with other tourists or local people and build memorable experiences.
