Constipation in newborn babies is rare, especially those who are exclusively breastfed. The newborn poop is pasty or almost liquid and babies who are breastfed usually poop several times a day in the first weeks. But after that phase, babies over six months can move the bowel only once or twice a week (and that is still considered normal).
When is the baby constipated?
Babies who take milk formulas tend to move the bowel only once a day, with a firmer consistency, but sometimes they only do once every three or four days. This is not considered abnormal, as long as it is not too hard and the baby is calm, without apparent discomfort.
But if your baby is pooping, it is likely that he is constipated, mainly in the first year of life and if you are no longer taking breast milk. According to experts, this process is part of the development of the child's digestive system and, during that transition, the frequency of mobilizing fecal matter may be irregular.
How to avoid colic?
To reduce the possibility of constipation and painful cramping, one of the natural remedies against constipation in babies is plum water. According to nutritionist Amanda Canale, this natural "remedy" contains fibers that help peristaltic movements. "But plum water, as well as hydrated plum, can only be used by babies with more than six months," says the specialist. Before that, it is recommended that babies are fed only breast milk or milk formulas, in specific situations.
How to make plum water for babies
It is easy and simple to prepare: you have to place six dried plums, preferably without pits, in a glass of water and let them rest in the fridge overnight. "It is recommended to consume the water before breakfast. Hydrated plums contribute even more to improving the consistency of feces and can also be used in the preparation of milkshakes," she explains.
Another option, if the baby is more than six months old and is already in the process of incorporating new foods, is to prepare a laxative juice with orange, papaya, hydrated plum and flaxseed meal. You have to give it in small doses to evaluate its laxative power.
