Megan Thee Stallion has been granted a five-year restraining order against Daystar Peterson, better known as the rapper and convict Tory Lanez. Megan has alleged that Peterson has been harassing her from behind bars as he serves a 10-year sentence after he shot her.
Megan’s request for a restraining order described Peterson as a “violent and dangerous criminal” with an “established pattern of behavior [demonstrating] the reasons this civil harassment restraining order is necessary to protect Ms. Pete and her wellbeing.” Judge Richard Bloom confirmed the order on Thursday, writing that Megan had “sustained burden of proof” for him to grant her motion. The expiration date for this order is January 2030 (via Variety.)
This comes amid another legal battle for Megan (full name Megan Pete.) She’s suing a gossip blogger for defamation. That suit alleges that Milagro Elizabeth Cooper, a content creator known by the screen name Milagro Gramz, has caused the rapper intense emotional distress by deliberately spreading lies about her, cyberstalking her, and promoting deepfake pornography of her. The lawsuit calls Cooper a “puppet” for Peterson and alleges that Cooper is working with the inmate to further harass and undermine her case against Peterson. A reminder that he was found guilty. He did it. He shot Megan.
Megan’s lawyers obtained recordings of Peterson’s prison calls and they say that Peterson discussed paying Cooper to be his mouthpiece. As the complaint detailed, “the Petersons [Daystar and his father] confidently asserted that Ms. Pete would be unable to prove that Mr. Peterson paid Defendant [Cooper] for attacking Ms. Pete.”
Since being violently assaulted, Megan has faced a barrage of hatred and harassment, often from people in her own industry, and repeated claims that she lied about being shot by Peterson. Plenty of bloggers have helped spread this falsehood and perpetuate the repeatedly debunked idea that women lie about being harassed and hurt by men all the time. There’s an abundance of people out there who hate women so much that they’ll push conspiracies just to prove their point (and Megan being a queer Black woman has made a lot of that rhetoric far crueler and more hostile.)
Megan is fortunate enough to have the financial means to push back against this hate, but as we’ve seen too many times in the past, there’s no sure-fire way to put an end to the smearing of victims. I hope she takes that blogger to the f*cking cleaners and that Peterson rots behind bars.
