Although I’m not a fan of the “wealthy people behaving badly” entertainment genre, I’ve found some stories that might bring me around.

The upcoming luxe thriller, The Perfect Couple, is based on the New York Times best-selling novel by Elin Hilderbrand. Susanne Bier (Bird Box, The Night Manager) directs Nicole Kidman in this follow-up to her previous Netflix movie, A Family Affair.

Kidman and Liev Schreiber star as the heads of a terribly rich and just plain terrible household of Nantucket WASPs who think they’re above the law.

The Perfect Couple also stars Dakota Fanning, Eve Hewson (Bad Sisters), Billy Howle (Under the Banner of Heaven), Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus), Ishaan Khatter (Beyond the Clouds), Jack Reynor (Midsommar), Mia Isaac (Not Okay), Sam Nivola (Maestro), Michael Beach (Mayor of Kingstown), Donna Lynne Champlin (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), and Isabelle Adjani.

The six-episode series begins streaming on Netflix on September 5th.

If I were trapped in 1348 Italy, waiting out The Black Death in a villa outside of Florence, I guess the fine citizens of Netflix’s upcoming The Decameron would be the folks I’d want to be stuck with. They’re awful, but it looks like they know how to have a good time.

The eight-part series is based on Giovanni Boccaccio’s collection of raunchy short stories published in the 14th century. It stars the very handsome Amar Chadha-Patel (Willow, The Wheel of Time), Leila Farzad, Lou Gala, Karan Gill (I May Destroy You), Tony Hale (VEEP), Saoirse-Monica Jackson (Derry Girls), Zosia Mamet (Girls), Douggie McMeekin (Chernobyl), Jessica Plummer, and Tanya Reynolds (Sex Education).

The Decameron premieres on Netflix on July 25th.

A different continent and a different plague, but the same class war in the upcoming film, Coup!

Peter Sarsgaard is at his best when he’s playing unreliable and somewhat sinister characters with hats. Billy Magnussen (Road House) joins him with Sarah Gadon (Ferrari), Fisher Stevens (playing Upton Sinclair? Sure, OK.), Faran Tahir (Lamya’s Poem), John Posey, Skye P. Marshall, and Kristine Nielsen (The Gilded Age) in this Greenwich Entertainment film that hits theaters on August 2nd.

A title as well-loved as Time Bandits, and a creator as well-known as Taika Waititi deserves to be more than lagniappe. But, I feel like we’re all a little burned out on Waititi. And the anemic response to Charlyne Yi’s on-set allegations of abuse have spoiled the taste of this remake. So here it is as a footnote, mostly because Lisa Kudrow is the captain of the Time Bandits and I can’t ignore that.
