“Elon is not right-wing!” That’s what someone in my extended family said to me on Facebook. I am partly at fault for engaging in such a topic on your worst uncle’s favorite website. The argument began over Elon Musk’s noted tax evasion and quickly devolved into a discussion about his worst qualities, of which there are many. Still, was my family member right? Is Elon not right-wing? I think the answer is yes. Not because Musk is progressive but because he has no morals.
Musk’s lack of moral compass comes into view constantly. Whether he’s posting a wildly offensive meme just to be provocative, claiming there’s such a thing as a “woke mind virus,” or deciding to block internet access to Ukraine because he’d prefer they surrender, Musk has no morals. Instead, like any villain who discovers Batman’s secret identity, Musk follows the money. If liberals are going to drop $40k on his cars, he’s going to support liberals. If Nazis are going to pay him $8 a month to hurl obscenities at minorities, he’s going to support Nazis.
Yesterday, it was revealed that Musk is suing the Center for Countering Digital Hate after it reported that 99 percent of Twitter Blue accounts are tweeting hate speech. Musk, being the free speech advocate that he is, is actively fighting against this particular bit of free speech. He claims that accounting like this will affect his ability to get advertisers. I’m no marketing genius, but I’d guess that companies won’t advertise with Twitter because they don’t want their ads appearing next to a Pepe The Frog meme covered in swastikas and dripping in racial slurs.
The whole thing feels like a distraction. Ad revenue is down on Twitter, except for those sweet Cheech & Chong gummy bucks, and Musk is clearly trying to find someone to blame that isn’t himself. Since he is already courting every hateful idiot he can find, it only makes sense that Musk creates a boogeyman out of the people that those people already hate. The suit likely won’t succeed, but his supporters won’t remember that. Musk has made a career out of not delivering on his promises. He won’t stop now.
Elon Musk is not right-wing. He’s not left-wing, either. He’s a man with an enormous platform that is open to the highest bidder. His allegiances are to his ego and whoever will inflate it for him. He’s a shallow, pathetic shell of a human being, and his legacy, which he holds so dear, will reflect that.
(As is our custom, header images of Elon Musk are replaced with that of Lee Pace for aesthetic reasons, and with apologies to Lee Pace.)
