I’m from the South, and much like my accent when I’ve had a few drinks, I can’t quite hide my love for country music. Fortunately, recent years have given me plenty of reasons to feel less self-conscious about it, thanks to artists like Jason Isbell, Zach Bryan, Tyler Childers, Maren Morris, Chris Stapleton, Luke Combs, Jelly Roll, and even Post Malone (seriously, don’t sleep on his country album!) and Beyoncé.
Enter Shaboozey, who turned heads in the country music scene after collaborating with Beyoncé on two tracks from her country album, Cowboy Carter. He followed that up with his own single—an irresistibly catchy tune that’s been on repeat everywhere for the last four months. Even after all this time, you’re still not tired of it.
“A Bar Song (Tipsy)” is a damn good track, and it’s held the top spot on the Billboard charts for 15 weeks, tying Harry Styles’ “As It Was” for the longest streak of the decade.
The rise of Shaboozey also brings a twist: if “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” holds the top spot for another week, it’ll tie with Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” for the biggest song of the decade. Wallen, of course, is infamous outside his fanbase for that drunken use of the N-word and generally being a walking disaster (although he’s made some public attempts to redeem himself).
That said, neither Shaboozey nor Wallen are likely to dethrone the reigning champion: “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X, which made history in 2019 as the longest-charting song of all time, holding the top spot for 19 weeks. And yes, it’s another country hit from a Black artist. “Oh my. Good lord.”
