Last year, Jeremy Allen White told a story about how he washed out of a Marvel audition because he had a bad attitude, which was fine by him because he couldn’t understand why actors would star in them anyway. He told British GQ that he’d rather make a “$25 million drama that I think most actors want to make.”
With that in mind, you’ll probably be very surprised to learn that White is reportedly being cast in The Mandalorian & Grogu movie as Jabba the Hutt’s son. First, some key things: The trades are reporting they’ve “confirmed” this news, but the primary source appears to be Jeff Sneider, so I’m not entirely convinced this is even happening. That said, The Bear is ending with Season 4 and White’s most notable film roles have been The Iron Claw and the upcoming Bruce Springsteen biopic, both of which probably weren’t the biggest of paydays. Could his agent have convinced him to take a fat Disney check for a stunt-casting voice role? Absolutely.
The randomness of this casting aside, what concerns me most as a huge dork who won’t shut up about Star Wars is the Jabba connection. The power vacuum created by his death was a major plot point in The Book of Boba Fett a.k.a. the spinoff where everything went wrong with The Mandalorian and never recovered. Season 3 was a disaster and proof-positive that this franchise ran out of juice, yet Lucasfilm is going to try and fart out a movie that requires watching the pinnacle of its creative bankruptcy. I don’t understand the calculus here outside of “Baby Yoda has a few drops of blood left, squeeze the little bastard — but theatrically.”
These are some very interesting choices provided any of this is true. Jeff Sneider’s last scoop claimed the Church of Scientology was buying the Jim Henson Company lot, which was immediately debunked. Although, it did get everyone saying his name, which is… exactly what’s happening in this situation. Sonofa.
Is it too late to delete this post? I have some regrets.
