When Paramount+ folded Showtime into its streaming service, they shifted focus from original programming (like the excellent The Agency) to exploiting IP. Plans are underway for spin-offs of Billions (Trillions, Millions, Billions: Miami) and Weeds, among others.
And then there’s Dexter. The network hasn’t hesitated to churn out more content. Even before the merger, Showtime released a Dexter sequel, New Blood, which focused on Dexter’s son, Harrison, who ultimately killed Dexter. Currently airing is Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel exploring young Dexter and the origins of his serial-killing ways. That prequel also tees up Dexter: Resurrection, another sequel where Dexter somehow survives. It’s a lot. Honestly, after just three episodes of New Blood, the concept already felt thin, reminiscent of how The Walking Dead spin-offs dragged on.
Of course, there’s yet another spin-off in the works, and here’s the update: the Trinity Killer prequel has been written, with John Lithgow signed on to provide voiceover. The catch? Showrunner Clyde Phillips is currently filming Resurrection and hasn’t started shooting Trinity Killer yet. But it’s coming.
I thought I’d be more excited about all these Dexter spin-offs. Unfortunately, based on New Blood and Original Sin, they’re not bringing anything new to the table—it’s just the same formula in a different setting or era.
That said, I have the perfect spin-off idea: Dexter: Billions, where Dexter starts taking out characters from Billions. It feels fitting for our oligarchic times.
