The Right Is Converging Around a Bonkers Taylor Swift Conspiracy Theory

I have 11-year-old daughters, so I am very familiar with Taylor Swift. I have nothing against Taylor Swift (although I prefer Olivia Rodrigo), but I am fascinated with how obsessed the right is with her. Megyn Kelly, for instance, will take every opportunity, no matter how trivial, to criticize Swift. This week, for instance, she scolded Swift for her reaction to the Jo Koy joke about her at the Golden Globes.

“Can she just show that she’s a good sport? I think she made the wrong move,” Kelly said. “It is annoying. And if she were smart, she would laugh like she was in on the joke.”

Thank you for your insightful critique of a pop star, Megyn Kelly. It’s not the first time she’s gone after Swift, either. Last month, she called for a boycott of Swift because the singer attended a fundraiser held by Ramy Youssef designed to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Kelly’s critiques, however, are mild compared to others. There’s Ben Shapiro, for instance, who mostly just complains that Taylor Swift is encouraging the gay lifestyle, but then there are the conspiracy theories that have begun to take hold.

This week on Fox News, for instance, Jesse Watters floated a theory that Taylor Swift is a psyop for the Biden Administration designed to combat misinformation. The basis for this is complete horseshit, and Watters himself admits that he has no evidence to support the theory. He’s just asking questions. Then he had a former FBI agent on to talk about the theory for another five or six minutes.

It’s not a new theory. Other right-wingers — Jeffrey Clark, Stephen Miller, Jack Posobiec — have suggested the same, while Tucker Carlson has even suggested that Kayne West warned us back in 2009. This is from an interview Tucker Carlson gave last month:

I’ve never heard her music. I don’t know anything about Taylor Swift, but I remember Kanye, who was then Kanye West, once attacked her in a very emotional way at an award ceremony. And I remember thinking at the time, I saw the clip at the time and I thought it was a racial thing. Oh, he doesn’t like white people. She’s white. Whatever. But if you listen to the clip, he’s actually making kind of a different point and he’s saying that this isn’t real. This isn’t art. This is an op. I mean, maybe I’m reading into it. He’s saying this person is being used by larger forces to control our society.”

She was activated as far back as 2009. Wow! And Kanye knew the whole time! But who is the nefarious force behind Taylor Swift? Who is bankrolling this psy op attending comedy fundraisers that provide humanitarian aid to Gaza? Jewish philanthropist George Soros, obviously!

Whoa! Deep, man. Deep!

These right-wing nuts have too much time on their hands. Obviously, the real threat to America is not Taylor Swift’s sweet, sweet melodies but the subliminal MAGA messaging in the music of Lee Greenwood. Oh, wait: There’s nothing at all subliminal about his lyrics.
