In case you needed a dose of joy this Monday morning, the likes of which we’ve been sorely lacking since the tragic loss of Robin Williams, one of the former child actors from Mrs. Doubtfire has a story.

In a recent episode of the Brotherly Love podcast, hosted by Doubtfire star Matthew Lawrence and his brothers, Lisa Jakub opened up about filming as a young actress and how Williams helped make it a better experience.

Jakub was still enrolled in high school in Canada while away filming, and she says she and her school “set up this system, pre-internet, where I’d mail my school work back and forth to the school.” That worked “for a while” and they also “had tutoring, three hours of schoolwork on set every day.”

But then, “We were a couple of months into filming, and my school in Canada sent a note saying, ‘This isn’t working for us anymore, don’t come back.’ Yeah, 9th grade. I was devastated. It was just so heartbreaking because I had this life that was very unusual and that was the one normal thing.”

Thankfully, Williams came to her rescue.

“Robin saw that I was upset—he asked me what was going on. He wrote a letter to my principal saying that he wanted them to rethink this decision and that I was just trying to pursue my education and career at the same time, and could they please support me in this.”

But apparently, this principal had a hole where their heart should be because they “got the letter, framed the letter, put it up in the office,” and still didn’t invite Jakub back to school.

Lawrence added that Williams wrote him a letter of recommendation that helped him get into the University of Southern California, so at least one of his letters was successful.
