Watch: 'The Simpsons' Spectacular Movie Reference Montage

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the greatest television — nay, thing — ever made is Golden Age era Simpsons.

The edges of this halcyon age are hazy and vary slightly from person to person, but most will agree that the boundaries lie somewhere around the start of Season 3 and the end of Season 8-or-so — with episode 2 of Season 9, The Principle And The Pauper, often being seen as the de facto end.

One of the great pleasures of these unbelievably febrile and fecund Simpsons years was the vast plethora of seamlessly integrated and lovingly crafted movie parody/homage sequences. Vimeo user cgmzz decided a few days ago to give the internet a gift: a montage of said sequences. The Simpsons of course didn’t stop doing movie parodies after the Golden Age, but the vast majority of those in this video rightfully come from those gilded seasons.

For me personally, the amazing thing about some of these is that occasionally when I picture a movie that The Simpsons parodied, their homage version of a certain scene will actually supplant the original in my head. That speaks to me of the insane level of craft given to these (or just of the fact that my brain circuitry was long ago replaced and rewired by Conan O’Brien, John Swartzwelder, and all the other god-like writers in that room in the early 90s).

Enjoy:
