The NYTimes reports that Donald Trump, who would be the oldest man ever to be elected President of the United States, is refusing to release any medical records, a little more than a month ahead of election day. This is the case despite issues surrounding both his physical and mental health.
The little information the American public has about Donald Trump is inconsistent and untrustworthy. Reportedly, the former President is medically obese, and his cholesterol levels are “dangerously high,” which could put him at risk for a heart attack or stroke. Donald Trump reportedly takes statins and has quadrupled his dose, but his cholesterol nevertheless remains stubbornly high, no doubt owing to a diet that includes fast food.
Even more worrisome is his cognitive decline. Trump’s father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and Trump has exhibited signs of mental decline. Two days ago, for instance, Trump gave two meandering, rambling speeches highlighting his inability to maintain focus. “During a series of remarks on Tuesday,” Vanity Fair reported, “the lack of facility with the English language, inability to keep world leaders straight, and bizarre, unhinged claims re: people who supposedly wish him dead were notable even for him—and especially for a guy who is asking voters to give him a second term in the most powerful office in the world.”
The Times reports that there also may be residual damage from the first assassination attempt made against him, both physically and mentally. It would not be unusual for a person who has been shot to develop PTSD. The NYTimes Maggie Haberman has, in fact, reported that Trump has appeared jumpier.
The state of Donald Trump’s health is all the more important considering how unpopular his Vice Presidential candidate, JD Vance, is. Polls show that Vance’s favorability ratings are lower than those of Trump’s historic record lows.
