One of the upsides of Blake Lively’s expansive lawsuit against Justin Baldoni over the smear campaign by his crisis management team is that it’s easier to spot where publicists are at work versus organic publicity (if such a thing even exists). Myles McNutt suspects there is some crisis PR management going on with the Brian Jordan Alvarez/English Teacher situation, and I suspect he’s right. Meanwhile, it’s become abundantly clear to me that the publicist of Lauren Sánchez, the fiancée of Jeff Bezos, is working overtime to rebuild her reputation.
Sánchez, of course, has some reputational obstacles to overcome. Not only is Bezos’ ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, the one good billionaire, but Sánchez entered into her relationship with Bezos through an affair. There were also rumors last week that Bezos is spending $600 million on their wedding, which sent social media into a tizzy. Bezos tried to dispel those rumors on X, but there’s nothing more effective than a good Page Six story about Sánchez holding hands with Bezos in Aspen “after denying $600 million rumor.”
Is Sánchez and Bezos holding hands in front of paps—where Bezos can be seen smiling for the cameras—newsworthy, even in the gossip world? Not really. But it also gives the newspaper an opportunity to note that Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner attended a Bezos holiday party because, again, Bezos is trying to cozy up to MAGA world.
Having learned that Sánchez and Bezos used to be represented by Stephanie Jones and that Page Six laundered some of Baldoni’s smear campaign against Blake Lively through Page Six, it does make it easier to spot that pattern.
Check the Lauren Sánchez archives on Page Six, for instance: It’s nothing but puff stories. Lauren Sánchez struggled with dyslexia; check out her “humble” childhood home; here, she unveils a $60 million grant to a wildlife foundation; here she donates $110 million to fight homelessness; oh, and check it out, her son is going to the same college as Kai Trump. And there are countless articles about how she “glows,” “shows off her figure,” or her “lacy bra.”
It all seems calculated to suggest that Sánchez is a hot, generous, Trump-loving girlfriend who hangs out with a lot of celebrities. Does MacKenzie Scott have a robust archive on Page Six? She does not! There’s one story about her in the last year, when Elon Musk attacked her “for her donations to race, gender rights charities.”
And that’s PR: a nasty, insidious, and utterly dishonest business designed to allow wealthy people to create an image that does not reflect reality.
