Robert Pattinson had a big interview in The New York Times this week where he opened up about his acting career heading into his role in Mickey 17 for Bong Joon Ho. Surprisingly, he also addressed the sequel to The Batman as well as his reason for taking on the role. If you’re a regular Pajiba reader, then you already know where this is going: My undying theory that The Batman Part II is not happening.
Despite what numerous headlines would have you believe, RBattz barely says anything about The Batman sequel except to acknowledge that it’s now planned for 2026 and still part of a trilogy. “I could genuinely be retiring by the end of them,” he told the NYT. That’s literally the quote in its entirety. However, it’s notable that he even acknowledged the future films because he’s been suspiciously quiet on that front.
That said, this little exchange also happened in an interview where Robert Pattinson openly admits that he is a notorious liar in interviews. As Andrew covered yesterday, no, he did not see a clown die in a car explosion as a child. RPattz is a trickster god who loves to just say anything in interviews because he gets bored.
What does that mean for The Batman Part II? As we saw in November, there has been some weirdness on that front. Despite the fact that The Penguin is a shockingly good spinoff, James Gunn pulled a strange move right after the show’s finale. Instead of leaning into the swelling hype building for The Batman Part II, Gunn went the opposite direction by revealing that the script is not ready, contradicting Matt Reeves. It was an odd wet blanket to toss.
More recently, Gunn also shared that he “contemplated” bringing Pattinson’s Batman into the DCU but decided against it at Reeves’ request. That suggests there have been concerns about two Batmen running around, and the Battinverse almost got swallowed up in those talks. Instead, maybe it’ll just fade away — or turn into HBO shows, which is starting to be the likelier prospect following the success of The Penguin.
Reeves himself has said that the impetus for his first look deal with Warner Bros. was to make “cool shows.” The big question is will Robert Pattinson be game to play a Batman who randomly pops up on HBO? Seems easier than the ordeal he went through for the first movie.
More importantly, please remember how many times I said The Batman Part II wasn’t happening. Put it in the newspaper. I need my kids to know I was always on my computer doing serious work.
