It’s been discussed for years, but it appears as though a Scrubs reboot is inching ever closer to reality. Showrunner Bill Lawrence has worked out a deal with his current boss, Warner Bros. TV, to develop the Scrubs reboot with Disney/ABC TV, though he won’t serve as the showrunner. Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, and John C. McGinley are all expected to return, though there’s a question mark surrounding Judy Reyes, who is currently starring in High Potential (she may do both).
In renewal news, Hulu has picked up a second season of Rivals, starring David Tennant and Aidan Turner, among others. I didn’t think it was that big of a hit stateside, but it broke into the top ten streaming series according to Realgood. It likely performed well across the pond on Disney+, which probably explains the renewal.
Outside of the Power Book franchise, it’s been a while since Starz had a hit. With Outlander wrapping up (it feels like that’s been happening forever), they’re in need of a new flagship. Enter Sweetpea, starring Ella Purnell, which has been renewed for a second season. It’s a co-production with Sky Atlantic. I’ll be honest: I didn’t watch the first season because Starz has been playing fast and loose with cancellations (Heels, The Serpent Queen, Becoming Elizabeth), and I didn’t want to get attached. But with this renewal, it’s now on my holiday watch list. Ella Purnell is excellent.
Elsewhere, the television adaptation of Like Water for Chocolate has been renewed. Although I didn’t hear much buzz about it—beyond Jen’s review—it became the most-watched Latin American content on Max worldwide and ranked among the platform’s top three series during its premiere month.
We haven’t covered Paramount+/Showtime’s The Agency yet, but we will. It’s very good and pulled in massive numbers during its debut weekend, leading to a quick renewal for a second season. Get in on it—this one’s going to be fun.
Peacock hasn’t had many hits lately, but they are moving forward with the fourth—and final—season of Bel-Air, the drama inspired by Will Smith’s Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. I gave it two seasons. It was okay, but I had no real interest in continuing it.
Also on Peacock, Eddie Redmayne’s The Day of the Jackal, a co-production with Sky, has been renewed for another season. I didn’t watch it because Redmayne is a soul eater.
There’s one sort-of cancellation to note. While not officially announced, it’s very unlikely that Peacock will move ahead with a second season of the John Wick spin-off The Continental, which suits me fine. The first season was a snooze.
Finally, HBO has announced the premiere dates (or ranges) for several of its upcoming series. White Lotus will return in February, The Last of Us in the spring, and another Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, in late 2025. Unfortunately, Euphoria fans will have to wait until 2026 for the next season.
