It was reported yesterday that the long-rumored, much-anticipated Malcolm in the Middle reunion has officially been greenlit. It’s a short, four-episode run—more of a check-in than a full-on reboot. I’m cool with it, if only for the chance to see Taylor Dearden’s dad reprise his role as Hal.

The premise? Malcolm (Frankie Muniz) and his daughter (Keeley Karsten, The Fabelmans) are pulled back into the family’s chaos when Hal (Bryan Cranston) and Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) insist he attend their 40th wedding anniversary party.

As Deadline reports, the reunion will also feature the original cast, including Christopher Masterson and Justin Berfield. But not Erik Per Sullivan, who played the youngest sibling Dewey at the time. (There’s a new youngest sibling now — teased in the series finale with Lois’ positive pregnancy test — who will be played by Vaughan Murrae.) Dewey has been recast with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, who definitely looks the part.

And so, after the announcement dropped, it wasn’t the Malcolm in the Middle reunion trending on social media, Google, and Reddit — it was Erik Per Sullivan. As in: What the hell happened to Erik Per Sullivan? And the truth is: no one really knows. And that’s exactly how Erik Per Sullivan wants it.

He was never expected to return. He retired from acting at 18 and, according to Kaczmarek, he’s chosen to live a private life, no matter how big the check Disney+ might’ve offered to lure him back.

And honestly? That’s kind of awesome. He has no social media presence. He doesn’t do the convention circuit. We don’t even know if he’s out there living his “best” life because staying off the grid is what he wants. Good for him.
