Silver Surfer and Galactus Highlight New ‘Fantastic Four’ Trailer

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer came out in 2007. That’s almost twenty years ago! They make a joke about how the Quinjet has a Hemy! But, in their defense, I remember that joke and what a Hemy is despite having only seen the movie once (while it was in theaters) and not giving a s*** about cars/trucks/etc. It came at a time when comic book accuracy was mostly still an afterthought. Hell, there were movie executives who would more or less say, “How do we make a comic book movie without it being comic booky?” That’s how you get Cloud Galactus.

Do you remember Cloud Galactus? He’s the villain (kind of) of that nearly two-decade-old Fox Marvel film. Galactus is a giant guy in purple armor who eats planets in the comics. Cloud Galactus is what he sounds like, and he moves to eat the planet by enveloping it. Additionally, there may be a guy in the cloud. It’s not very good, but I legitimately appreciated the big swing! That’s not a flex. I’m not reclaiming anything. Adaptations require changes; Cloud Galactus just doesn’t work.

Now, we’re in a new age. Fifteen years and one more failed Fantastic Four movie later, we’re being greeted with a new flick about Marvel’s First Family that, as Mike pointed out before, looks comic-accurate as hell. The Thing is big and orange. Their costumes are fun and colorful. The world looks similar to the comics of the ’60s. Now, a new trailer has dropped showing how much further the accuracy will go. Sue Storm is having a baby. The Fantasticar looks futuristic by way of the space race. And Galactus ain’t a cloud.

We already received some teases of the big guy in the last teaser, but this one took things a step further (pun intended). Galactus’s giant feet stomp through the streets of NYC by the end of the new trailer. He is big and he is coming, but we still don’t have a super clear look at him. That is not the case for his emissary, a character who also made their first big screen appearance in 2007, the Silver Surfer. This version of the character, played by Julia Garner, looks rad.

To be fair, the 2007 version of the Silver Surfer didn’t look bad! His motion capture was performed by Doug Jones, and he was voiced by Laurence Fishburne. That’s a great combo! Regardless, this new version surfs onto the scene with gravitas. The character design is hard to beat, so it’s smart to just give us what we expect (albeit a different version).

The new movie doesn’t seem like it will stray away from its source material. It looks very different from a lot of other MCU entries for that reason. That doesn’t mean it will be a surefire success, and I’m already nervous they’ll have to do a lot of setup for next year’s Avengers: Doomsday in this film, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t as excited as ever.
