Auditioning is an insane aspect of acting. Performers can spend decades honing and perfecting their craft. They deliver nuanced, thorough performances over hours or weeks, depending on the medium. Then, depending on their level of fame or success, they have to get more work by showing off their skills in two to five minutes. Not only do they have to convey all of their abilities in that short time, they have to make an impression and hope they don’t look like the casting director’s ex-spouse.

So much can go wrong and everything can go right in an audition and the actor will have almost no control over it. You want to make an impression but not go too far. Sometimes there is a script to read from, other times you need to show some improv skills, and, occasionally, both are necessary. You also have to act like you want the part but not seem desperate and, spoiler alert, it’s hard for actors not to feel desperate! So, with all of that added pressure, it can be hard to keep your cool or not take the opportunity to kiss or slap one of Hollywood’s biggest heartthrobs.

That was the case for Margot Robbie when she found herself auditioning with Leonardo DiCaprio. The actress had achieved several successes at that point in her career, but was still relatively unknown. She was presented with an incredible opportunity, auditioning for a role in The Wolf of Wall Street. The audition scene called for a kiss, but Robbie decided to go a different direction. “I thought, I could kiss Leonardo DiCaprio right now, and that would be awesome,” she said on the Talking Pictures podcast. “I can’t wait to tell all of my friends this. And then I thought… nah. And just walloped him in the face.”

I have nothing but respect for Robbie’s in the moment decision. A little much? Sure! Also, hitting people is bad! But, we live in the future and know it worked out in Robbie’s favor. She got the role. Luckily, she didn’t have to wait long to know it went over well. “It was dead silence for what felt like an eternity but was probably three seconds,” explained Robbie. “Then they just burst out laughing. Leo and Marty were laughing so hard, they said ‘that was great.’ I was thinking, I’m going to get arrested, I’m pretty sure that’s assault, battery.”

She wasn’t wrong to be nervous! Leo could have freaked out, but the star had no problem with it (maybe because Robbie was still under 25). The Wolf of Wall Street ended up being a huge breakthrough for the actress and now she is a household name. I don’t think the moral of the story is to slap your way to the top, but if you can find a time and place to slap Leo DiCaprio why not give it a shot (please do not slap Critters 3 star Leonardo DiCaprio)?!
