Season 49 of SNL saw only one new addition: Chloe Troast. Despite several memorable moments during her stint on the late-night comedy series—her duet with Timothée Chalamet in “Little Orphan Cassidy” chief among them — she was unexpectedly fired after one season. No one knows exactly why, not even a heartbroken Troast — who spent a month in nature licking her wounds — because Lorne Michaels is notoriously tight-lipped and mercurial.
Some theories, however, have emerged, according to Reeves Wiedeman in a longread for New York Magazine about what might happen to SNL after Michaels’ eventual retirement. In the piece, Wiedeman reveals several theories he heard regarding the decision to ax Troast. The theories range from the usual — SNL didn’t know what to do with her, which is bizarre because they had figured out exactly what to do with her, to claims that Michaels had asked her to lose weight or that he simply decided to fire someone because the cast had grown complacent.
The most bizarre theory to come out of the article is that Michaels fired her because “Troast had invited a friend to the show’s after-party who sidled up to Michaels’s table and stole a piece of food off his plate.”
Wait, what?
It’s probably not true, and Lorne Michaels will never say exactly why he fired Troast. However, the fact that it’s even a possibility says a lot about 80-year-old Lorne Michaels at this stage in his career. Even if it’s false, if you think your boss might fire someone because their friend took a piece of food off their plate? Well, that sounds like an intense, borderline frightening place to work. Stay away from Michaels’ plates, Jane Wickline!
