It only took a fortnight but Inside Out 2 has become the highest-grossing film of 2024 so far. In its second week of domestic release, it brought in a highly impressive $100 million, bringing its worldwide total to *deep breath* $724,383,116. That means it leaped over Dune: Part Two, which spent most of the year comfortably atop the perch with $711.8 million in the kitty so far. The highest-grossing Pixar film is Incredibles 2, which has over $1.24 billion to its name, but Inside Out 2 does seem like it’s on a good trajectory to, if not topple that film, then at least get to a billion with change. It’s already close to earning more than Up and Monsters University.

Debuting at number three is The Bikeriders, starring Austin Butler and Tom Hardy. It earned $10 million from 2,642 theatres, which is on the higher end of Focus Features’ expectations for the movie. In the competition of new releases this past weekend, hot dudes on bikes did better than demons and Russell Crowe.

At number seven is The Exorcism with a paltry $2.439 million from 2,240 theatres. This one had bad reviews and felt inessential to the core. I wouldn’t be surprised if people thought it was somehow connected to the last Russell Crowe exorcist movie we got, The Pope’s Exorcist. At least that one had Crowe on a Vespa.

Right behind that is Thelma, the comedy starring June Squibb in her first-ever leading role. After a strong premiere at Sundance, this one made $2.21 million from 1,300 theatres, giving it a higher per-cinema average than The Exorcism.

The concert film GHOST: Rite Here Rite Now, which follows the Swedish rockers performing at the Kia Forum (and is co-directed by Alex Ross Perry?!), made $1,521,550 from 751 locations.

In limited release news: Yorgos Lanthimos’ anthology Kinds of Kindness warned $350,000 from five cinemas; Annie Baker’s drama Janet Planet grossed $49,684 from two places; one of my favourite films of the year, Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person, earned $10,337 from three cinemas; and the Polish drama Green Border brought in $7,005 from one location.

This coming week sees the release of A Quiet Place: Day One.
