I love a good action comedy, but unfortunately, they haven’t been playing that well relative to their budgets lately. See, e.g., Fall Guy and Dungeons and Dragons. The solution, however, is not to stop making action comedies. It’s to make them cheaper so that they don’t need to earn $500 million at the box office to break even.
Enter Jackpot! from a guy who knows how to turn a profit on modestly budgeted buddy action comedies. In addition to Bridesmaids, Paul Feig is the guy behind Spy ($235 million on a $65 million budget) and The Heat ($229 million on a $43 million budget). Jackpot! stars John Cena and Awkwafina, has the same action-comedy vibes as those other two films, and probably costs less than $60 million (the giveaway is a trailer that features lots of punches, but few explosions).
It also looks like a blast, and it’s on Prime Video so there’s no need to feel any pressure to spend $15 on a movie ticket to support the kind of movie you want to see more of. All you have to do is watch it and the streaming powers that be will make more!
Jackpot! hits Prime Video on August 18th.
