Jonathan Majors was found guilty of reckless assault in the 3rd degree. His trial was very public. People formed their own opinions (as they often do) before he was found guilty, but he was found guilty. He was sentenced to probation and a year of a domestic violence intervention program. Disney dropped him from the MCU but also gave him a televised interview to tell his side of the story. The whole thing made it feel like Majors wasn’t going to suffer much of a career setback for his crimes. I’m here to tell you that that is exactly the case.
Deadline is reporting that Majors is set to star in a revenge thriller directed by Martin Villeneuve (Denis’ younger brother). The film is titled Merciless. The movie reportedly “follows a top CIA interrogator who, after the woman he loves is overtaken by a malevolent force, is forced to go even darker to defeat it.” If the idea of a man convicted of assaulting and harassing his ex-girlfriend starring in a movie where he has to battle his demon-possessed lover raises your eyebrows, you are not alone!
Majors continuing to have his dream job despite being a creep is bad enough. Him jumping back in with a movie about fighting his girlfriend feels insane. It would be like Louis CK making a movie where a character forces women to watch them masturbate (OH WAIT). If you’ve read any of the texts from Majors’s trial or seen how he talks about himself, there’s no way to see this movie as anything but a big swing at redemption. The only way it could be worse is if he had someone from Sound of Freedom helping him. GUESS WHAT?!
Producer Christopher Tuffin developed the project. Tuffin’s last big project was the Jim Caviezel-starring, right-wing fever dream Sound Of Freedom. That film, and Merciless, are part of his new global media venture that he says “refuses to let the court of public opinion and selective prosecution undermine great art and artists.” Granted, a regular court was part of finding Majors guilty, but let’s not let semantics get in the way!
This whole thing stinks to the high heavens. This is a group of men attempting to send a message. They want you to know that they will not bend to the whims of cancel culture! Hollywood won’t dictate what they do and do not put out! The only people stopping pedophiles are brave, religious types! All women they don’t like are possessed by demons! These men suck, is my point. They all suck.
