For some time now there has been a video of a giant turtle walking towards the sea while a group of people watch from behind. The video is believed to be filmed at a Mexican beach. The turtle's size is so noticeable that it even became a viral topic on the internet. Although it is really striking, here's a bit of background you should know about these turtles.
Watch viral video below:
The turtle seen in the video is a Leatherback Sea Turtle–and yes, they are HUGE! They are about 6 to 7.2 feet and weigh between 550 and 1,500 pounds. According to New World Encyclopedia, "the leatherback sea turtles can feed in both cold and warm environments because they can maintain their body temperature above the water temperature."
However, the leatherback sea turtle, although not extinct, is an endangered sea animal. According to information from The American Museum of Natural History, one of the primary threats to their survival are the coastal sandy beaches where they nest. Fishing is another because they get caught in nets and suffocate. In some parts of Asia, their eggs are harvested for food and they are hunted for its oil and flesh. Plastic is also an issue since their primary food is jellyfish and they can't distinguish between both.
