Bleeding during sex is almost always a sign that alarms couples. During pregnancy, any trace of blood makes future mothers worry even more. Despite this, it is important to know that sex during pregnancy is healthy. However, there's one position that can cause the expecting mother to bleed during intercourse: Doggy position.
Dangerous sexual position in pregnancy
According to Brazilian gynecologist Dr. Mariana Scombatti Filipe, all sexual positions can be related to vaginal bleeding in pregnancy because the local tissue, during this period, is more delicate and vascularized. "However, the doggy style also contributes to another factor: the movements of the penis can cause gas to accumulate in the vagina, causing trauma to the vagina and causing bleeding," she explains.
Why does doggy style cause bleeding?
The gynecologist and obstetrician, Dr. Fernanda Araújo Pepicelli, of the Bandeirantes Hospital, explains that it is not only during pregnancy that the position presents a risk of causing hemorrhage—it's that in pregnancy the woman should avoid further complications in all areas, and a hemorrhage in a pregnancy is almost always more dangerous and worrying than in a non-expectant mother, since there is another life at stake.
Fernanda explains that the bottom of the vagina is the most frequent location for trauma in the region. "There, the wall does not have any organ or tissue on which it can lean, and it is in direct contact with the abdominal cavity." The air in the vagina can generate a kind of vacuum in the cavity, which presses the wall further, causing its rupture and consequent bleeding.
"The situation is rare and it requires the intervention of a professional. Whenever there is vaginal bleeding during pregnancy it is important to contact your obstetrician," recommends Fernanda.
