Apparently, Drake and Rihanna are just a couple longed for by their fans and nothing else, seriously. In 2016, Drake took the stage at the MTV VMAs to present Rihanna with the Vanguard Award. He gave a heartfelt speech which made us sigh and get excited.
"She's someone I've been in love with since I was 22 years old, she's one of my best friends in the world. All my adult life, I've looked up to her even though she's younger than me. She's a living, breathing legend in our industry."
Then Drake tried to kiss her and she simply dodged him. We all think that Riri was only shy and secretive because millions of people were watching that moment. We were wrong.
After this love confession on live television, the rumors began again that they would finally consolidate a relationship after years of coming and going; however, Rihanna actually felt quite uncomfortable with the situation. In an interview with Vogue, Riri talked about her relationship with Drake; journalist Chioma Nnadi asked the singer about their friendship, and she "made a slight grimace at the mention of the rapper's name before her eyes blurred with cold indifference."
Rihanna reflected on what happened that night:
“The VMAs is such a fan-focused awards show, so having that energy around me, and knowing the people who had received the award in the past, made it feel like a big deal,” she says. “Waiting through that speech was probably the most uncomfortable part. I don’t like too many compliments; I don’t like to be put on blast.”
In context, at that time Rihanna was at the height of her ninth album Anti, which defied all expectations and got excellent reviews. In fact, for her the 2016 VMAs was one of the most memorable appearances of her career, with a mix of her most successful songs and a series of amazing costumes. However nobody talked about that, the whole event went unnoticed by what Drake did afterwards. What we all saw as a great opportunity to resume their relationship, was actually what ended up ending it. Months later, rumors about her love diminished and Rihanna started dating billionaire Hassan Jameel, with whom she still has a relationship.
Now, she and Drake are not even friends. “We don’t have a friendship now, but we’re not enemies either. It is what it is.”
Probably Drake did not intend to make her uncomfortable with his speech, but we can't blame Riri for feeling the way she did: cornered and on blast! Has anyone ever expressed their love for you in front of tons of people? Did you feel pressured? We totally understand Rihanna!
