We're starting to see all things sparkly and festive, and your schedule is probably packed with special occasions that involve glitter and gifts. Which is all lovely - unless you're not a fan of the holidays!
And we get it - sometimes you're just not in the mood to spread the holiday cheer, and it is certainly not required. But at the same time, no one wants to be a downer! So here's a couple ways to tame your inner Grinch this holiday season.
Dress the part.
This is essentially the wardrobe version of faking it till you make it. It's tough to be in a bad mood when you are looking fabulous, of course, and even tougher if your outfit is sparkly, shimmery, or covered in glitter. Wear what makes you feel good, whether its your favorite cocktail dress or just a little bling with your PJs on Christmas morning.
Make yourself a sparkly beverage.
It's tough to be too melancholy if you have a glass full of bubbles! If you imbibe, champagne or prosecco are the obvious choices, but sparkling water and soda are just as festive. Add a twist or lemon or lime, some berries, or a slice of fruit to make your beverage extra special.
Help others celebrate.
We honestly don't mean to guilt-trip or make things worse, but the holidays aren't all about you and your feelings - in fact, in many cases, Christmas especially is for the children. And that can be a great way to put things in perspective! Really, sometimes it helps to get out of your own head and focus on making things better for others when you're in a bad mood.
So if you're not feeling the holiday spirit, perhaps switch gears and help other people enjoy the holiday season - whether it is making sure the kids in your life have an incredibly special day or donating money to charity, or volunteering for a worthy case. After all, it's not just about you!
Give yourself something to look forward to at the end of the holiday season.
Be kind to yourself, skip a few parties if you have to, and remember that the holiday will come to an end sooner than you think, and it'll be time to get on with the New Year and life will return to normal. And if you're somewhat grinchy, that is most definitely welcome! You can even plan a reward like a gift that you really wanted but didn't get for Christmas, or a trip to somewhere amazing.
