I'll be the first to admit that I go ham with Instagram's latest GIF feature for stories. I was shocked when all of a sudden the option disappeared. I restarted my phone, I updated the app, I did everything imaginable and nothing revived my new favorite feat.
For a second there I even believed that IG took away my GIF-posting privilege. Then, I realized that many people, including my friends, were in the same shoes—the GIFs were no longer available on Insta. Snapchat, who also integrated GIFs earlier this year was also in the same boat, but why?!
Turns out that both apps have ~temporarily~ removed their GIFs option after a user discovered a racist image in the GIPHY bank. The GIF, which can be seen here, appeared when the word "crime" was searched for and was extremely offensive and degrading to people of color.
“After investigation of the incident, this sticker was available due to a bug in our content moderation filters specifically affecting GIF stickers," said a GIPHY spokesperson, according to The Verge. "We have fixed the bug and have re-moderated all of the GIF stickers in our library."
The GIF was removed after it was discovered, resulting in both Insta and Snap to disable the GIF option while the case is resolved.
