[Note: This song would probably be best played with Dionne Warwick’s “That’s What Friends are For” but also, “You Got a Friend in Me” is a pretty sick tune, so I went with that because it’s the less expected choice. For maximum enjoyment, I suggest you put this on as you read the article below.]
Like any child who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s I have a Pavlovian response to the mere mention of Oprah, mainly that I f*cking LOVE Oprah. Her show was always on in my childhood best friend’s house, and Oprah’s voice lulls me back to that time in a way only Otterpops and Mathnet can.
So, it is with great regret I tell you that I have never met Oprah (I have, however, met people who met Oprah, and the question I always ask them is: what does she smell like? The answer was clean linen, so now you know.) That means I still don’t have a personalized answer for what’s the nicest thing Oprah has ever done for me, as it stands, my answer has to be “she exists in this wild, kooky, mixed up worlds of ours.”
Gayle King, her best friend, however, does know what’s the nicest thing—and it’s pretty nice, I gotta say.
Per People, because you know they have the goods:
The first holiday Gayle King was going to be spending without her children Kirby and William was New Year’s Eve, shortly after her 1993 divorce from William Bumpus.“My ex was going to have the kids,” recalls King, who was the anchor at WFSB in Hartford, Connecticut, at the time. So, she called longtime friend Oprah Winfrey. “I was talking to Oprah on the phone that morning. And I said, ‘What are you guys doing?’ And, she told me something.”
Preparing to spend night alone, King was shocked when “four hours later, the doorbell rang and she and Stedman [Graham] were at the door,” she says. “She had been planning to come. I didn’t know that.”
That is pretty sweet of Oprah.
Well, there you have it, the nicest thing Oprah has ever done for Gayle King. While I don’t have any Oprah stories to share, I can share that I once got dumped, out of the blue, via text, and my friend dropped everything to come to LA and hangout with me for the weekend. We ended up going to Disneyland and talking s*it about him to the Disney Princesses, and he was deemed “bibbity boppity bogus” so, I guess the moral here is: Stars! They’re just like us. They make sure their friends aren’t alone when they don’t want to be. That’s what friends are for (among other things.)
In a perfect world, we’d all use this opportunity to share our Oprah being awesome anecdotes, but realistically, it’s more likely that you have other friends not named Oprah who have done awesome things for you, so share those, too! And remember, keep smiling, keep shining because…
