Ariana Grande Is Courting Those Audrey Hepburn Comparisons

For weeks now, I’ve been seeing rumblings of Ariana Grande starring in an Audrey Hepburn biopic. After some digging, though, I can’t seem to find anything concrete that suggests such a biopic exists beyond a 2022 announcement that it was in development, with Rooney Mara playing Hepburn, and directed by Luca Guadagnino. Whether or not that’s still happening seems to be up in the air. So, I’m not sure where the rumor came from, but I like the comparison. And so does Ariana.

Wicked proved that Grande has great comedic instincts and physicality, two things Hepburn had in spades, but also that she has depth beyond the pop-star, leading lady thing. Audrey Hepburn wasn’t just another Hollywood starlet; she was a character in and of herself, and it’s that character—that je ne sais quoi—that Grande is cultivating of late. It’s not that she went so method on Glinda she got stuck that way—she’s cleverly branding herself to be taken seriously as an actress by referencing one of the best and most universally adored of all time. Sunday night at the Golden Globes she wore archival Givenchy, Hepburn’s favorite designer and frequent collaborator. With the gloves, the diamonds, and those baby bangs, she knew what she was doing. Maybe now she’ll finally give up on the Glinda blonde.

I, however, think she’s better than a biopic; that would be an imitation. I’d rather see her interpretations of some of Hepburn’s classic films, like Roman Holiday, Funny Face, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, My Fair Lady, and my favorite, Charade. After all, our current culture is obsessed with remakes and, as Grande knows well, classic films. Maybe for once we could put that to use on something people are actually asking for!
